Sight Restoration and Blindness Prevention Program
Treatment of Avoidable Blindness
The Foundation’s Sight Restoration and Blindness Prevention Program had its beginnings in the Bali mobile eye clinic which began in 1991, offering cataract surgery free of charge for the lower socio-economic group.
There are around 4 million blind people in Indonesia, and 3 million of these are cataract blind, a condition which is curable in most cases. However for most Indonesians a cataract operation is far too expensive for them to consider and they remain blind throughout their lives, a burden on their families and communities.
The John Fawcett Foundation is committed to do as much as it can to eradicate curable blindness in Indonesia and to this end is seeking funding to expand its very successful mobile eye clinic model to other disadvantaged areas of Indonesia.
This Project works in close cooperation with the local Departments of Health and comprises:
> Field
eye screenings – adults and primary school children
>
Free cataract surgery
