Digital Camera donated to the Foundation |
| |
John Hugo
of CR Kennedy and Co, the Australian distributor of
Pentax, and Tom Thomas of Gateway Duty Free, Perth Airport
donated a new Pentax Optio S5i Digital Camera to the
Foundation in Perth recently (John Hugo and Tom Thomas
are pictured here with John Fawcett).
The Foundation is very appreciative
of this gesture, as digital photos are essential for
diagnosing patients who aren't able to travel, consulting
with specialists via email, and for the Foundation's
reporting and fundraising purposes. |

15-18 June 2005:
Eye Screening in North Bali
|
| |
Funding from
Jenggala Keramik and Surya Inc has been allocated to
a series of five mass village eye screening and school
screening programs.
In this first funded screening, the YKI/JFF
team, working with the North Bali Mobile Eye Clinic
team and staff from Rumah Sakit Indera, screened around
700 village people for eye problems in the areas of
Gitgit and Pancasari in the north of Bali, issuing 400
pairs of glasses.
Visiting volunteer ophthal-mologist, Dr
Peter Graham, from Perth, Western Australia, attended
the screening to diagnose and treat some of the more
difficult cases. Volunteer theatre nurse, Susan English,
and her husband, John, also assisted with the screening.
Patients requiring cataract surgery were
operated in the North Bali Mobile Eye Clinic. Cases
other than cataracts, and low vision patients were referred
to Rumah Sakit Indera, Denpasar.
The YKI team also screened children
at four local primary schools and issued glasses to
those who needed them. |

June 2005:
Assistance to Desperately Ill Child |
| |
Three year
old Kadek came to the Foundation's office with his parents
in May, suffering from an acute skin condition over
his whole body which was causing him great distress.
His older brother had earlier died from the same condition,
and his parents were too poor to seek medical attention
for Kadek. With advice from skin specialists in Australia
and the right medicines, Kadek was well on the way to
recovery in a few weeks.
Assistance to children from poor families
is one of the goals of the Foundation. Many of the medicines
are donated, some are purchased from OPAL in South Australia,
and others are bought through regular pharmaceutical
channels. The Foundation is always seeking funding to
continue this vital assistance to those who cannot afford
medical treatment. |

May 2005:
Pharmaceuticals for tsunami victims in Aceh |
| |
With donations
from Harvey World Travel and individuals, YKI/JFF is
supplying pharmaceuticals to Bumi Sehat, a Bali-based
NGO. Bumi Sehat is working with women and children in
the district of Meulboh on the south-west coast of Aceh,
an area which bore the full brunt of the tsunami.
A medical team from Bali travels
regularly to Aceh to help these victims, taking much
needed medical supplies and assistance. |

A mass eye
screening field trip was organized from 9-11 May,
based at the Zen Health Resort near Seririt in north
Bali. Members of the JFF Board and their partners
stayed at the Zen Resort and participated in the screening
program.
Working in conjunction with the North
Bali Mobile Eye Clinic team, the YKI team screened
around 350 village people for eye problems. Twelve
sight-restoring cataract operations were performed
in the mobile clinic, with post-operative checks the
following day, and 120 pairs of spectacles were issued.
A separate YKI team conducted
eye screening in four of the local primary schools,
testing 450 pupils for refraction problems and issuing
spectacles to those who needed them. |
