March - April 2005



25-28 April 2005:
Eye Screening Field Trip to Blahbatuh, Bali

A mass eye screening field trip was organized from 25-28 April in Blahbatuh, a rural area in southeast Bali. George and Bernie Georgis, Australian optometrists, assisted the team from YKI and the Rumah Sakit Indera with the screening, which covered 400 village people. 150 pairs of spectacles were issued and 12 patients were referred to the mobile eye clinic for cataract surgery.

The team also conducted school screening in four of the local primary schools, testing 389 pupils for refraction problems and issuing spectacles to those who needed them.



14-15 April 2005:
Seminar on Glaucoma for Balinese ophthalmologists


Dr Bill Morgan, glaucoma specialist from Australia, traveled to Bali to give a two-day seminar on glaucoma and its treatment to Balinese ophthalmologists and ophthalmic nurses.

During his visit, which was organized in conjunction with the Indonesian Ophthalmologists Association, Dr Morgan demonstrated new techniques in glaucoma treatment and surgery.




11-23 April 2005:
Volunteer ophthalmologist visits NBMEC and South Kalimantan MEC


Dr Ian Spencer, ophthalmologist from Australia, came to Bali for a second time this year.

Dr Spencer spent one week with the new North Bali Mobile Eye Clinic team, assisting ophthalmologist, Dr Sekar and the North Bali Mobile Clinic team.

He then traveled to South Kalimantan to review the work of the new ophthalmologist in the Mobile Eye Clinic operating there.




April 2005:
Our 'child of the month' - an amazing transformation!



Patrick Scott reports on Wantrini, a young girl from the Amed area in the eastern part of Bali who had a cleft lip operation under the Foundation's program in November 2004.

Patrick reports that Wantrini no longer sits in the front row of the class. She now has friends, is doing better at school and joins in singing which she didn't do before.

Within a few months she will smile!!




March 2005:
Donation to establish mobile eye clinic in East Java


The Foundation has received a wonderful donation of US$100,000 from Fred Murrell in the USA to build a new mobile eye clinic for East Java, where there is a high incidence of cataract blindness. East Java is also a very poor area with a high rural population.

The mobile clinic will be built in Bali to the same specifications as the two new Bali mobile clinics. The Foundation is seeking further funding to buy a support vehicle, and for operating costs.




March 2005:
Tax deductibility in the USA and Australia

Donations to the Foundation are now tax deductible in the USA and Australia.

5 March 2005:
Orthopaedic operations with visiting volunteer surgeon


A team comprising visiting volunteer Australian orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Philip Hardcastle, Dr Jaya Kesuma and Dr Anom operated on two young girls at the Puri Raharja Hospital in Denpasar on Saturday 5 March.

One girl suffered from a club foot, a congenital condition which prevented her from walking properly, and the other from a bone cyst near the ankle. The bone cyst was removed and repaired using synthetic bone - a first in Bali.

Left: Marrieke from Yayasan High 5 Rehabilitation, Singaraja, will assist this young girl following her surgery with regular physiotheraphy sessions to ensure a successful outcome.




2 March 2005:
North Bali Mobile Eye Clinic commences operations


Ophthalmologist, Dr Sekar, and the medical team pack supplies before leaving Denpasar.


Day 1 of operations - ophthalmologist, Dr Sekar, and assisting nurse, Wayan Dharma.

 

After six weeks of training, the North Bali Mobile Eye Clinic medical team started cataract operations in the Sawan area, east of the main northern city, Singaraja, on Wednesday 2 March.

The North Bali Mobile Eye Clinic project is managed by a Working Team from JFF/YKI and Rumah Sakit Indera, and will be funded by AusAID for a 12-month period, using lenses and pharmaceuticals donated by Alcon International through JFF/YKI.
