Signing of MOU launches Bali TB Laboratory Training Project |
 |
Dr Dewa Oka, Director
of the Bali Department of Health, and Richard Elsey, on
behalf of the Australian TB Consortium (comprising the
Perth Chest Clinic, Curtin University, WA, the Institute
of Medical & Veterinary Science, the Australian TB
and Chest Association (ATCA), Westcare Incorporated and
YKI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding which established
a cooperation arrangement to work towards the prevention
and control of TB in Bali. |
|
| The TB Project will train laboratory technicians
in the central government laboratory and in village clinics
in microscopy techniques to enable accurate diagnosis of this
disease, from which about 400 Indonesians die every day. |

Cleft Lip and Palate Operations |
 |
With funding from the Rotary Club of
Seminyak, Bali, and individual donors, the Foundation
organized operations for nine children with cleft lips/palates
at the Rumah Sakit Puri Rahaja.
Several of the children were from Amed, Karangasam,
one of the poorest areas of Bali. |

The 'sad girl' finally smiles
|
 |
We were delighted to receive this photograph
of the girl we had nicknamed 'the sad girl', whose cleft
lip was operated by Dr Tim Cooper in April. The photo
on the right was taken in early August, about four months
after her operation, in Wayan Putu Asih's village in
a remote area in the east of Bali. |
|
| Photographed
with Wayan is Patrick Scott, from the Rotary Club of
Seminyak which provided funding for the operation. |

16 August and 28 June 2004:
Colostomy Operation |
 |
The Foundation arranged
a colostomy operation for 9-year-old Ketut Widyasih
to reconnect her bowel, giving her normal function.
The initial operation, performed at the Rumah Sakit
Puri Rahaja in Denpasar, was not as simple as expected,
and Ketut required a second operation to complete the
procedure. |
Funds for Ketut's operation were raised with the enthusiastic
assistance of Wilma Peake from Perth, Western Australia. |

July 2004:
Donation of Spectacle Lenses and Frames |
|
WA Opticians Associates has donated a staggering
300,000 glasses lenses and 40,000 frames to the Foundation.
With the help of many volunteers, these have
been collected and are being stored in Perth for subsequent
transport to Bali for use in the new Australia Bali Memorial
Eye Centre (ABMEC). |

Passing of Life Member, John Pizey |
 |
John Pizey, Life Member of the JFF, passed
away in Perth in July. A long-term member of the Rotary
Club of Scarborough, WA, John designed and helped modify
the school bus, which became the Mobile Eye Clinic and
subsequently enabled over 10,500 sight restoring cataract
operations on village people in Bali. John Pizey was also
instrumental in securing donations of thousands of dollars
worth of medical equipment, including a CT Scanner, and
arranging its transport to Bali where it is being used
in government hospitals. John's compassion and enthusiastic
support will be missed by Foundation, its members and
his friends. |

 |
The Hon Christine Gallus, Parliamentary Secretary to the Australian
Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, visited the mobile eye
clinic operating in the village of Tembuku, Bangli, accompanied
by staff from AusAID Jakarta, John Fawcett and YKI. The village
people were checked for cataracts, and seven requiring surgery
were operated; others received free spectacles and treatment
for infected eyes. |
