< back to team page

Richard Elsey joined The John Fawcett Foundation Board in 2004. He became associated with Foundation after being instrumental in obtaining a grant from the Australian Red Cross (from Bali bombing donations) to train laboratory staff in Bali in the detection and treatment of tuberculosis a disease that is rampant in Indonesia. That program is being managed by Yayasan Kemanusiaan Indonesia, the operating arm of the John Fawcett Foundation, in Association with Westcare, a charity providing employment and accommodation for people with disabilities in Western Australia.

Richard was a board member and subsequently CEO of Westcare until his retirement in 2004. Prior to that he held a variety of positions in engineering and management including companies in mining equipment design and supply, engineering consulting services, construction contracting, and in mining and mineral processing.

His experience includes a period of 8 years as a consultant to the Government of Western Australia in an agency responsible for the development of Western Australia’s mining, agricultural and oil and gas resources and associated infrastructure. During that period he was employed as a project director and department Chief Executive.

Richard has worked overseas, in Indonesia, India, Canada and the UK. In Indonesia he was responsible for the management of an engineering business in joint venture with one of the country’s leading private companies. His time in India included working on a proposal to develop an iron ore mine and processing facility.

Richard is a retired professional engineer and a graduate of the University of Western Australia. He also has business administration qualifications from the Universities of Melbourne and NSW and is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
