Richard Elsey
joined The John Fawcett Foundation Board in 2004. He became associated
with Foundation after being instrumental in obtaining a grant from
the Australian Red Cross (from Bali bombing donations) to train
laboratory staff in Bali in the detection and treatment of tuberculosis
a disease that is rampant in Indonesia. That program is being managed
by Yayasan Kemanusiaan Indonesia, the operating arm of the John
Fawcett Foundation, in Association with Westcare, a charity providing
employment and accommodation for people with disabilities in Western
Australia.
Richard was a board member and subsequently CEO of
Westcare until his retirement in 2004. Prior to that he held a variety
of positions in engineering and management including companies in
mining equipment design and supply, engineering consulting services,
construction contracting, and in mining and mineral processing.
His experience includes a period of 8 years as a consultant
to the Government of Western Australia in an agency responsible
for the development of Western Australia’s mining, agricultural
and oil and gas resources and associated infrastructure. During
that period he was employed as a project director and department
Chief Executive.
Richard has worked overseas, in Indonesia, India,
Canada and the UK. In Indonesia he was responsible for the management
of an engineering business in joint venture with one of the country’s
leading private companies. His time in India included working on
a proposal to develop an iron ore mine and processing facility.
Richard is a retired professional engineer and a graduate
of the University of Western Australia. He also has business administration
qualifications from the Universities of Melbourne and NSW and is
a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
